Zaheer Khan plays spoilsport
Zaheer Khan who won the man of the series award in the recently concluded test series, has gone against his skipper’s comments by stating that he was not feeling tired after India bundled out England in the first innings of the third test. This statement has put Rahul Dravid in an even more tighter spot considering the backlash that he is already facing for his decision to not enforce the follow-on against England.
In a private interview, Zaheer is quoted as saying, “As far as I am concerned, I have given everything to this series. I don’t think I was tired or anything… Not really.
Clearly there seems to be some hidden agenda behind Zaheer’s statement, or quite possible that he had his ears and eyes shut when Dravid was giving his post-match conference. It also brings to the fore the issue that there is almost always going to be petty politics happening in Indian cricket all the time. Rahul Dravid deserves all the credit for the way he has handled his team considering they are without a head coach and the pressure of performing well after the World Cup debacle.
Making statements like this goes to show that Zaheer still has not matured enough when it comes to PR. He may have improved as a player but he still has a long way to go with regards to media skills.
Dravid would not even care, he has won the test series that mattered and his name will go into the record books as the captain who led India to a series win against England after 21 years.
Zaheer would do well to keep his mouth shut in the future when he is giving these types of interviews as these comments harm the team morale and team spirit, and for a team like India that is a rare entity.
