“The greatest sporting event on the planet”

Graeme Swann, referring to the Ashes, says:

It’s the biggest thing in cricket, the greatest sporting event on the planet. It is the most important series England and Australia play, as simple as that. The biggest Test series in cricket, full stop. Of course every series is important, but if you ask any of the players what is top of their wish list then winning an Ashes series would be it.

I beg to differ here. This is extremely narrow-minded of Swanny to say this. First Ashes is only between 2 countries. Yes it is hyped. Yes it is passionately followed by the two countries. But, it is not the greatest series anymore. Personally, I think that the Border-Gavaskar series has taken on a monumental position now considering the last few series that has been played between India and Australia.

Then we could also count any series between India and Pakistan. I mean the two countries have fought wars against each other. So any series gets an edge just because of the history between the two countries.

Swann also says:

“Being the No. 1 Test team would be a great title to have and it’s what we are going for. We’ve made no secret about that – we want to be No 1 in both Tests and one-dayers.”

Come later this year, that ambition could well and truly be realised if England beat India convincingly. I, for one, am really looking forward to this one as it promises to be a cracker. England have definitely improved leaps and bounds, no doubt about that. But so have India. And India now have that important key thing to winning overseas – self-belief. Have England got it to beat India? We will see soon.
