So Delhi Daredevil’s chances have been snuffed out. Second time in as many seasons they have failed to make it to the play-offs (final four). This time Mumbai’s total of 178 was 32 runs too many for the visitors. Delhi’s chances were crashed when they were 7/4 in 2.5 overs. There was no miracles this time as Sehwag was one of the men who was out early. Too much was left for Venugopal and Hopes. Had the total been around 150, they may still have fancied their chances.
The credit for this win goes to Ambati Rayudu and the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers. They did not allow the Daredevils to come anywhere close to the asking rate. The pressure kept mounting and the wickets kept falling. All in all Mumbai prove to be the most consistent team in the tournament so far, and Delhi’s batting woes continued. Losing 4 top order wickets for only 7 runs is not acceptable and Sehwag was rightfully pissed off with his team’s batting effort so far in the IPL. I think they have a major problem at No 3. Considering Venu’s consistent run so far I am surprised why he isn’t being promoted up the order.
What this defeat has done for Delhi, though, is that they can now experiment to get their best possible combination in preparation for next year. They will also have to bid aggressively in the next auction to get more depth in the batting, especially for No 3 and No 4. Even though Warner hasn’t really clicked in the last 3-4 matches, he is still vital for his team. Warner is what Sehwag used to be early on. He needs to learn to control his aggression a little bit more and he will be a vital asset for the Daredevils.
So all Delhi fans will now be hoping for a much better performance next year. I am actually looking forward to see what the combinations will be for their remaining matches.
