NKP Salve Challenger Trophy 2007

I haven’t covered this tournament as it really is a waste of time with no real sense of which players are good enough to be selected for the Indian squad. You cannot decide an international team based on only a couple of matches. The tournament has not been planned properly with only one game against each other and the final. As it stands after yesterday’s match, India Red are in the final thanks to a bonus point.

In the first match, India Blue were led to victory by a solid innings from Suresh Raina who has vowed to come back into the Indian team. And why not, the bloke has all the right ingredients to play a big part in the future of Indian cricket. The match really should have belonged to Virender Sehwag who was the captain and is also looking to make a comeback into Team India. However, quite unsurprisingly, he managed to goof up this chance again. So did Dinesh Karthik. He continues to get out on the Big O in the shorter format of the game and the selectors would really be thinking if we need Dinesh Karthik as a second wicket-keeper in the squad with Parthiv Patel being a much better batsman.

India vs Australia 2007, Twenty20 Match Report

World Champions against World Champions. Definitely a new rivalry in the making. This time, however, India were the defending Twenty20 World Champions. For a change, something that is as rare as word itself, Australia were NOT the favorites. And yesterday night’s match proved why Australia still has a little more work to do in this new format of the game.

The problem for Australia was the team selection. You cannot, I repeat cannot, go to a match in India, no matter what format, without a regular spin bowler. Australia left out Brad Hogg, clearly their best bowler in the ODI series, and that was where they lost the match. Winning the toss and deciding to bat first was always the right thing to do in this match. Ricky Ponting seems to have lady luck on his side whenever he goes in for the toss in a crucial match. Yesterday was no different.

The Australian openers have always enjoyed batting against the Indians and the T20 format would have suited them to the tee. However, that was not the case to be. Adam Gilchrist started the proceedings by smashing RP Singh for three consecutive fours only to see his middle stump uprooted off the very next ball. India drew first blood. Gilchrist was the wicket they wanted early on and that is exactly what they got.

Twenty20 World Cup, India vs Pakistan, Final Match

India skipper Mahendra Dhoni celebrates his team's triumph in Johannesburg Click here for the match highlights

Phew! Amazing. Spectacular. Astounding. Thriller. Sensational. Exhilarating. I am actually out of words to describe this match. No anti-climaxes here. The ending justified why these two teams made it to the finals. It was a day to remember, for both teams played like there was no tomorrow. The edge-of-the-seat thriller that only an India-Pakistan tie can create. I know there are already a million or so articles on this match, but I had to write this one down as I am still in a dream daze.

The all important toss was won by Dhoni and once again the Indian skipper decided to bat first. There were no surprises here. The theory is to get a big total in a final and then defend it letting the other team try and chase the total, preferably a bigger one. They say that a final match always brings some kind of surprises. Man, there weren’t just some but plenty of surprises in this match.

The first, and perhaps not really a big surprise, was that Sehwag pulled out due to the thigh strain that he had sustained during the start of the India-Australia semi final. And surprise surprise, look who walks in to open. None other than the “other” Pathan. In what could only be described as a gutsy move, Dhoni decided not to go with Dinesh Karthik or the most experienced player in the squad, Ajit Agarkar. So Yousuf Pathan was given an opportunity to play at the biggest stage any debutante could have ever dreamed of. And that too opening the batting in a pressure cooker situation. India needed a good start and it was really asking too much from a youngster. Confidence in your own men is one thing, but over-confidence can make or break careers.
