Bhajji targeted again, and cleared

Harbhajan Singh, Bhajji, TurbanatorIn the most recent of stupid and completely baseless allegations, the Australian public targeted Harbhajan Singh for allegedly making monkey gestures at the Sydney crowd in the first final of the Commonwealth Bank series. According some members of the crowd, Harby had made monkey gestures by scratching both armpits directed towards the spectators. However, the ICC has cleared Bhajji of any misgivings as there is no evidence.

Allan Border has come to the Indian’s defence. “I was over that side of the ground and Harbhajan was copping a fair bit of stick from the crowd. I didn’t notice any gestures at all and I thought he handled himself pretty well. I’m not so sure how serious it is,” Border said.

Ponting in full praise of Sachin and Lara

Posted March 15th, 2007 by mrtagger No Comments »

Now this has definitely come as a surprise. On one hand Ricky Ponting is in a war of words with another Indian Great, Sunil Gavaskar, and now he has openly praised Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar. Ponting said that Tendulkar is the most complete batsman he has ever seen play and that he rates him over Lara. Although he also mentioned that Lara can be more damaging than Tendulkar on his day.

Ponting has been the most successful Autralian batsman in the last 12 months winning the ICC Player of the Year award. He also won the Allan Border medal recently for his batting performance and captaincy. However, Australia have been under the pump recently after their 5 consecutive defeats against England and New Zealand.

Battle of the Captains - Part 1

Posted February 26th, 2007 by Nanda 1 Comment »

Here I will be talking about all the captains taking part in the World Cup. With the tournament so evenly balanced, any team can walk away with the honours. It will be upto the individual captain to lead from the front, be it batting, bowling or fielding. Let me start this 4 part series with Australia, Bangladesh, Bermuda and Canada.

Australia
Captain - Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting

Matches 269
Runs 9856
50s 58
100s 22

Ricky Ponting has had a phenomenal year leading up to the world cup. He was named International Player 2006 at the ICC Awards ceremony and won the Allan Border medal for 2006. After seeing his team annihilate England in a 5-0 Ashes romp, he had to face the ignominy of watching his side slump to a 5 match losing streak. It all started with the first final of the Commonwealth Bank cup in Melbourne on 9 February, 2007. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Aussies started off well to be at 170/1 with Ponting on 75. After Ponting’s wicket, Australia slumped to 252 all out in 48.3 overs. England started of disastrously at 15/3, but Bell, Collingwood and Flintoff saw them home. The next match was an even better performance by the English. A win by 34 runs sealed the Commonwealth Bank. From here Australia travelled to New Zealand without Ponting and Gilchrist. And went on to lose 3 matches with 2 of the highest successful run chases in ODI history. Australia’s fate depends on Ponting who will have to single handedly get his team out of the hole that his team is in right now.
