After the poor starts that India have been getting off late in the ODI matches, one begs to question the selection criteria of the team. With Gautam Gambhir injured, I would have expected Sehwag to be brought back into the team. Instead the selectors have gone ahead and brought in Subramaniam Badrinath from Tamil Nadu.
Of course, there are people who would say that Badrinath’s time was due as he has been batting superbly in the domestic circuit. But there are others, including me, who would say that we are not playing against Zimbabwe or Kenya, but against the World Champions. The team needs a player who has the ability, and more importantly the experience, to face up to the giants of cricket.
Quite honestly, I was very impressed with the team selection for the T20 World Cup. But the team selection for the ODI’s has for a long time been stuck with the melodrama of including seniors as they are the guiding force. The Indian team does not need a guide anymore as that responsibility is for the coach and the captain. Unfortunately for the Big 3, they are neither. With continuous failure in the last 6 months in the shorter format and just hints of brilliance here and there, and that is not good enough anymore.

New Australian coach Tim Nielsen has reportedly warned his young team members to respect other players and to refrain from making obscene remarks. If any team member is found to be guilty of not looking after their on-field behavior, then he will have to sit out. These tough measures are said to be the result of Sunil Gavaskar’s comments that the Australians are unpopular winners due to their poor on-field behavior which Nielsen has taken to heart. According to Nielsen, the Aussies need to conduct themselves more professionally as he wants the team to be recognized not just for its winning habits, but also for how it behaves on the field. This could be a big about-turn by Australia who are known to be the top sledgers in cricket. Things are going to be interesting.

Lawson was offered a 2 year contract as Pakistan’s next cricket coach which he has accepted. It is said that his bowling skills got him the job considering that Pakistan’s strength has always been pace bowling. Lawson managed to edge out fellow Aussies Dav Whatmore and Richard Done. Dav Whatmore now has been snubbed by all Asian teams including India, where he had expressed his desire to coach. This time, it seems, Ranatunga’s remarks probably worked against him.
PCB chairman, MrNasim Ashraf was quoted as saying:
“We weighed all our options and, though all three were highly qualified, we felt Lawson was most suitable to our needs. Dav Whatmore and Richard Done were not any less candidates, just that Lawson was what we needed.”
