Upset #2 in as many days. West Indies are out of the tournament, despite some heavy batting performance. This time it was upset-favorite Bangladesh. After a shock win in the 50 over edition early this year, Bangladesh has sent the Windies back home, to where they belong. West Indies, who had started very well in their practice game, have had two shockers with the ball. Agreed, their batsmen were superb. But, if you can’t defend 200+ in a 20 over match then there seems to be some problem. And that problem was well exploited by Bangladesh.

Set a target of 165, Mohammad Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed played superb knocks of 61 and 62 respectively. Ashraful was at his destructive best, smashing 61 in only 27 balls. His 50 came off only 20 balls, including 7 fours and 3 sizes, and that really set the stage for the 5 wicket win. Aftab Ahmed remained unbeaten and had faced 49 balls.

What a start to the Twenty20 World Cup. A run fest in its truest sense. Absolutely no respite for the bowlers from either teams. Spectacular innings from Chris Gayle and Herschelle Gibbs. SA won the toss and Smith elected to field first. Chris Gayle then center-stage in this match. Scoring the first century of the tournament, as he smashed 117 from only 57 balls and a mammoth 10 sizes. Yes, that’s a world record in a Twenty20 match so far and I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets broken shortly.

He was ably supported by Devon Smith and together the two put on 145 for the first wicket from only 13.3 overs. If this is the way things are going to be, expect some unthinkable totals in a twenty over game.

South Africa, on their part, chased the total relatively comfortably. They still had another 14 balls to spare. Such was the pace of the chase that at one stage they were only 88 runs from 8.1 overs. This equates to 120 runs smashed in only 9.3 overs. Quite unbelievable. The hero for South Africa was Herschelle Gibbs whose unbeaten 90 from only 55 balls set up the chase perfectly for the host nation.
