In an
earlier post on how India can make it to the second spot in the ICC rankings, I had mentioned that India needed to win the series by 3-0. However, with the first test ending in a thrilling draw and India comprehensively beating England in the second test, the stage is clear for these two teams to end a tightly fought contest in the ongoing test series.
If India manage to win the final test and make it a 2-0 series win, they will tie with England at 109 rating points. This would result in both teams tied for the second spot, in front of Sri Lanka who is at 107 rating points.
However, if India are jinxed again in their next match after a win and end up losing the third match, the series would be a 1-1 draw. India would only gain 2 rating points to move in front of South Africa to become 4th. England would still lose 2 rating points, but they would still be 2nd.
A third option is that the final test may end in a draw. In that case, with India winning the series 1-0, they will gain 5 rating points to reach 107 and become joint 3rd with Sri Lanka. England would still retain 2nd spot, however, they will lose 4 rating points to finish with 111 points.

With the onset of the England tour, India have the chance of reaching second in the test rankings, provided they do a clean sweep. At present, India, with 102 rating points, are placed 5th after Australia, England, South Africa and Sri Lanka. However, if India were to win 3-0, they would be placed second and England would slip to third spot. What is more interesting is that they could be within striking distance of the Aussies come December when they tour down-under.
On the other hand if India were to lose things would get pretty embarrassing. A 3-0 or 2-0 defeat will put the team behind Pakistan and New Zealand on 7th spot. They would only be in front of West Indies and Bangladesh. Definitely where they would want would not want to be. Even if the win 1-0 they would still move up, so they have everything to gain as long as they don’t lose. And a lot to lose if they are defeated.

After a stunning performance with the ball in the recently concluded test series against the West Indies, Monty Panesar has made it to the ICC Top 10 list of test bowlers. With a total of 23 wickets, Monty gained a total of 6 places to be joint 6th on the ICC list with fellow bowler Mathew Hoggard. Monty will have a chance to further improve his tally during the forthcoming series against India, although, I might add that this will be extremely difficult as Indians are the best players of spin bowling. Ask Shane Warne.
