Gayle leads West Indies to series win

Runako Morton boosted West Indies' total with his unbeaten 82West Indies finished their tour to England on a high by winning the 3 match one-day series. Leading by example, Chris Gayle scored a sedate 82 that took 126 balls. However, it was this very innings that laid the foundation for the West Indies’ 293. At 108-3, with Devon Smith, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels all out, Gayle had a big 85 run partnership with Ricardo Morton. Both of them played contrasting innings. Whereas Gayle was trying to stay till the end, Morton was busy blasting the bowling to all parts. It was like watching two sides of the coin at the same time. But I think the defining innings was played by Dwayne Bravo. He came in with the score at 193-4 in 42 overs. It was like he came, he saw, he conquered. Bravo smashed 42 from only 24 balls to help the Windies blast 96 runs in the last 8 overs.

What was surprising was the fact that Monty Panesar did not bowl his 10 overs. He got only 6 overs for 28 runs which was paltry as compared to how much the seamers were thrashed for. Chris Broad, in particular, was in for some treatment. His 9 overs cost 71 runs and he was wicketless. Anderson and Plunkett were the only bowlers to get wickets. Both completed their 10 overs and went in excess of 5 runs an over. Anderson got 2 and Plunkett managed to snag 3 wickets.

Chanderpaul levels series

Shivnarine Chanderpaul's seventh ODI century was the cornerstone of West Indies' victoryShivnarine Chanderpaul led the way for West Indies to a 61 run win over England in the second ODI in the three match series. After being asked to bat first, West Indies started well with a 50 run partnership for the opening stand. However as always happens with the West Indians, 2 quick wickets fell and they were reeling at 67-2. And then came the partnership that saved the day. Chanderpaul and Samuels put on exactly 175 runs in 33.4 overs.

In fact, the last 10 overs saw a massive 102 runs added to the West Indies total. Chanderpaul remained unbeaten on 116 which came off only 122 balls. Samuels got 77.

Panesar spins England to close win

Monty Panesar once again proved why leg-arm spin is not finished in cricket. With match figures of 10-187 he spun magical spell around the West Indians. After taking 4 wickets in the first innings, Monty continued his fine performance throughout this series with 6 wickets in the second innings. This is not to say that West Indies player miserably. Their chase in the second innings was far from it. Excellent performances by Chanderpaul, Morton, Devon Smith and Dwayne Bravo ensured that they were always in the hunt.

However, on the final day, it was going to be Panesar and to some extent Harmison who got England their third consecutive win of the series. With Flintoff coming back, watch out India.

Heaven for West Indian DJ Sammy

When Sammy walked to the field in the second innings he had no idea on what would transpire this day. With 7 for 66 in the second innings of his debut match, Sammy was in a world of his own. A world that every debutante wants to be in. A world where dreams come true. And for Sammy nothing could have been better.

England were well on their way for a match-winning total, but for the two sessions completely dominated by this 23 year old from St Lucia. In Sammy, West Indies may have found the match-winner that they so desperately need. However, they still need to chase a target in excess of 400. And with one wicket down, Sammy’s effort may still end up for a losing team. But as they say, failures are the pillars of success. So hoping for the best for West Indian cricket.

Its on like Donkey Kong…

What a start to the World Cup. With West Indies winning the first match so convincingly, it makes me wonder what will happen to the other “favorites”, ie: Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The punters in India are betting big on these three countries to take the Cup. However, I personally think that its either India, West Indies or England who could spring a surprise as these are much more balanced than the above mentioned teams.
