Ponting claims, “almost ended up behind bars”

In a recent interview, Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting claimed that his poor remarks after the World Cup win almost landed him and his team behind bars. After the Aussies defeated Sri Lanka in the World Cup final, the players were rejoicing on the ground. After some time one of the police men asked Ponting to get his players to vacate the ground.

Ponting’s response - “Hang on. We’ve just won the World Cup. Can’t you give us one minute?” - after adding “a swear word into that request, which the police officer did not appreciate at all.” Any person would be offended, and definitely saying things like this to a cop is not the best of things to be doing in a foreign country. In Ponting’s own words, “He stepped towards me, and my teammates moved in behind me, as if a real stink was about to take place. I think they threatened to lock us up for the night, and we soon realised that we weren’t going to be permitted to finish our ceremony.”

Woolmer WAS NOT mudered

As per the latest news reports, the Jamaican police have confirmed that Bob Woolmer died of natural causes and was not murdered as many had been led to believe. This also opens another can of worms for the police authorities as rumors have it that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may sue the department. However, what is still not clear is that why was Woolmer declared to be murdered when the police did not have enough evidence. Or is it because this is now being a cover-up. In the world of international politics, anything is possible and there will always be suspicions on whatever is ultimately decided.

Double whammy by Bangladesh

First India and now South Africa. Bangladesh have once again shocked the cricketing world by beating World No 1 South Africa by a massive 67 runs. Well, to some it may come as a shock, but people who have been following Bangladesh for the last 12 months would know that these results were only a matter of time. I, for one, am delighted to see these big teams losing to Bangladesh. You may ask why? Quite simple, we now have another team in cricket who is going to be competitive and bring that extra bit of spice in an increasingly stale and repetitive sport.

So, who has actually won? Bangladesh, of course. But there is the ICC who would be standing proud after persisting with Bangladesh when only a couple of years ago they were being challenged on Bangladesh’s Test status. And with China coming into the cricket circle, Asian cricket is going to see a massive sea change. With Pakistan in the doldrums and India coming to grips with reality that they are simply not good enough to defeat world no 1s on a regular basis, Bangladesh could be the savior in these difficult times for the Asian bloc.

New Zealand crush England

Scott Styris latches onto a pull during his fine inningsNew Zealand won their first match in the World Cup today. After being set 210 for victory, the Kiwis reached the target with 54 balls and 6 wickets in hand. The star performers for New Zealand were Scott Styris (87 not out and 2 wickets) and Jacob Oram (63 not out and 1 wicket).

After winning the toss, and after their successful run chases against Australia recently, Stephen Fleming had no hesitation in electing to field first. The result was early English wickets falling and the score reduced to 52-3, before Pieterson and Collingwood came up with a much needed partnership of 81 runs. However, both departed quickly and the England suffered a major middle order collapse as Flintoff went for a duck. In a matter of a few balls, England scorecard went from 133-3 to 138-7. And then came Nixon and Plunkett, two unlikely saviors. Both remained unbeaten and took the final score to 209-7.

New Zealand, on their part started disastrously, with Vincent, Fleming and Taylor departing in quick succession to leave the Kiwi middle order a huge task to win the match. At 19-3, Vaughan must be thinking that England have an excellent chance to win this match. However Styris and McMillan had other ideas. They kept the scorecard ticking and just when New Zealand looked like they were gaining momentum, Panesar got McMillan to heave a catch at deep cover. In came Jacob Oram and shared an unbeaten stand of 138 runs with Styris to seal the match.

Its on like Donkey Kong…

What a start to the World Cup. With West Indies winning the first match so convincingly, it makes me wonder what will happen to the other “favorites”, ie: Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The punters in India are betting big on these three countries to take the Cup. However, I personally think that its either India, West Indies or England who could spring a surprise as these are much more balanced than the above mentioned teams.
